about

Repa-Songs and Dances

This album was recorded in 1999 on a multitrack cassette recorder––a TASCAM Portastudio––in Pacifica, California. I never released this album because, at the time, I thought it wasn’t particularly good. However, listening to these recordings of traditional and contemporary songs again after many years, I feel it is quite a nice album after all! So, I have decided to share it with everyone.

In the 1990s, home recording was in its infancy, with four-track cassette recording revolutionizing the home studio. I learned how multi-tracking works by recording layers upon layers and started experimenting with playing my dranyen (traditional lute) via a Fender acoustic amplifier and adding vocal doubling and harmonies.

One interesting tradition in Tibetan songs is that the combination of a melody and lyrics is not always fixed. A singer can choose a melody and insert different lyrics according to his or her liking or to fit any occasion, a practice that renews our folk songs over the generations.

Two of the melodies included on this album were, in fact, borrowed from other cultures, but most of the tracks are traditional Tibetan songs that elders from Tibet brought with them into exile. These songs have endured our decades-long experience outside of our homeland, despite the intense influences of Bollywood and Western music on our culture. These melodies were enjoyed for centuries in Tibet and now I am fortunate to be able to share them with you.

I hope you enjoy these songs and share them widely.
